Most flat surfaces on metal engine and transmission
parts are generated using milling or broaching. When the part tolerances
and surface finish requirements are more exact than can be repeatability
produced with these processes, parts are ground.
Ford developed and patented a process that combines the milling and
grinding of parts into a single processing step. The resultant quality
is that of a ground part with processing times and costs similar to
parts that have been milled. Ford has licensed a machine tool builder
that is capable of supplying this equipment
The invention offered is best suited for transfer machines. It will
simultaneously mill and grind a metallic flat surface in a single
station with concentric milling and grinding spindles. Separate motors
drive each spindle. This technology is designed for finish cut applications.
It can be used on all aluminum and cast iron parts cut with water-soluble
coolant. The technology is available today and has been in full production
at the Ford Essex Engine plant since 1997.
Benefits Summary
Precision Surface Machining provides higher quality parts including
improved height and surface finish characteristics and flatness. Precision
Surface Machining eliminates post process grinding operation that
reduces capital, labor, and material handling cost. Tooling cost is
significantly reduced due to the optimization of both milling and
grinding process. Additionally, Precision Surface Machining enables
different part-to-part sealing technologies for increased customer
satisfaction.
